Choosing an intraocular lens may not be an easy task unless you have a simple criterion like buying the least or the most expensive one. The problem with least costly is that it saves money but may not serve your purpose well enough. It is a matter of vision, after all. And the most expensive can unnecessarily cost you more than you need.
So, let us have a brief but precise understanding of everything about IOL or intraocular lenses.
What is an intraocular lens?
It is a type of artificial lens implanted after removing the cataract-affected natural lens from the eyes through surgery. It helps to clear vision by focusing light; in the same way, natural lens functions. In the technical sense, IOL used in cataract surgeries are known as pseudophakic IOL, which is different from artificial phakic lenses used in refractive optical power correction surgeries.
Usually, artificial lenses are made of PPMA, silicone or acrylic glass; silicone and acrylic are inert, foldable, and the safest optical implant. Improvement in material science and design has improved quality and reduced the cost of manufacturing IOL.
Types of pseudophakic cataract surgery IOL
Depending on focusing capabilities, pseudophakic IOL can be of 4 types –
- Monofocal – These are made of rigid materials like PMMA and pre-adjusted to a specific fixed focal length; they cannot function as the natural lens in our eyes. Doctors predominantly recommended these lenses to elderly patients experiencing presbyopia or on the verge of experiencing presbyopia – the natural decay in focusing capability of our eyes. These lenses are the cheapest and not preferred by doctors.
- Multifocal – As the name suggests, these lenses can function like our eyes’ natural lenses, focusing at multiple distances. The usual choice of materials is silicone or acrylic glass.
- Toric – These lenses are suitable for patients with corneal astigmatism. The cause of astigmatism is an imperfection in the curvature of the eyes and often results in retinal tear and detachments. Standard toric IOLs are monofocal, but multifocal variants of toric lenses are also available.
Prices of intraocular lens
The factors affecting prices of IOLs are FUNCTIONAL FEATURES, BRAND and COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. Made in India lenses with similar features can be less expensive than imported IOLs. Similarly, some brands are more costly than others for apparent reasons.
Any reputable eye surgeon usually prefers standard multifocal, foldable and hydrophobic lenses unless patients have specific eye conditions. The price of these lenses varies between ₹15,000/- to ₹30,000/-. However, with additional features, imported IOLs can cost even ₹1,00,000/- or higher. Health insurance plans cover the cost of IOL with certain upper limits and conditions.
Which is the better lens?
The quality of standard India-made intraocular lenses has improved tremendously in the last couple of years. Except for special requirements, Indian lenses are as good as any standard imported lens.
