Eyes of your baby are previous and sensitive and thus need extra care while cleaning them. Eye care for your new born needs to be started right from your baby’s birth. New born has a tendency to have a lot of rheum or scab because the eyes produce a lot of mucin, a mucous liquid that helps moisturizing the eyes. The babies also sleep for a longer period which increase the appearances of this residue. When this substance dries up, sediments appear at eyelids and outside the eyes. Moreover, this type of secretion increases the risk of eye infection in babies, which is why you need to keep a good eye on your baby’s eyes.

Tips to take good care of your baby’s eyes

  • Before cleaning your baby’s eyes, wash your hands with water and neutral soap to avoid infection in the baby’s eye.
  • Never wipe baby’s eyes with your hand, cotton, cloth or paper handkerchief.Use a sterilized object.
  • The eyes should always be cleaned from the tear duct to the corner of the eye so that the debris come out.
  • If the eyelids are dry, moisten them and then try to separate.
  • Carry out cleaning with a sterilized wet wipe or gauzein order to soften the scabs and facilitate the extraction of secretions. Never rub or scratch if they do not come out properly as it might damage the baby’s eyes.
  • Physiological serum is better to use to moisten the gauze. However, you may also use lukewarm water.
  • Chamomile and other infusions must not be usedto clean the eye. It may cause allergies or infections.
  • Cleaning of eyes should be done a couple of times a day. Afetr waking up in the morning, if there is too much deposit of secretions, and after the bath.
