Eye Surgery

Early diagnosis of an eye condition can help contain further decay in the eyes’ health, improve vision, and cure most eye diseases. The treatment might involve simple medication, non-invasive and invasive procedures.

With modern innovations in medical science and technology, precision surgical procedures for eye diseases have become more accessible and affordable for ordinary people in India. At The Retina Centre (TRC), we treat acute and complex eye diseases and disorders every day using our modern diagnostic, investigative infrastructure and expert doctors; at price points that the masses can afford.

Here we have explained some of the major eye surgeries and provided essential information on these procedures. It might help patients and families of patients to understand the treatments better and make informed decisions.

Retina Surgery

Eye conditions in the back two-third of the eyes or PSED are, in general, termed retinal diseases. This eye segment includes the retina, vitreous body (gel-like substance inside our eyes), choroid, and optic nerves. The common diseases of the retina can involve any part of the posterior segment of the eyes. We regularly serve patients with retinal diseases like,

  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma (optic nerve)

  • Scleral Buckling surgery –

It is a standard invasive procedure to treat retinal detachment involving closing the retinal breaks and flattening the retinal surface. A scleral buckle is a spongy, semi-hard piece made of silicone, rubber, or plastic. Doctors place the piece on the exterior white portion of the eyes. The element pushes the sclera (white exterior part of the eye) in, and the pressure relieves the retina pull. Retinal tear settles on the internal wall.

  • Vitreo Retinal surgery is a group of multiple procedures performed inside eyes’ gel-like vitreous substances to treat diseases like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic vitreous hemorrhage, and detached retina. These procedures can involve conventional incision or bladeless laser surgery. Laser incision allows high precision accuracy and faster healing.

Glaucoma

It is a posterior segment eye condition that damages optical nerves and causes gradual decaying of eyesight. In India, glaucoma is one of the significant reasons behind elderly blindness. Detecting glaucoma is not easy, and it requires specialized diagnostic investigation under expert doctors. An early diagnosis can prevent vision loss due to glaucoma and restore any decay in vision. The primary surgical procedures to diagnose and treat eye conditions resulting from glaucoma are,

  • Trabeculectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures for treating glaucoma; it helps remove the blockage in the eye’s fluid drainage tube system and drain out the fluid. It might involve local or general anesthesia.
  • Goniotomy is a procedure doctors use to observe parts of the anterior chamber of the eyes using a particular type of lens, called goniolens, and drain out the fluid. Usually, doctors prefer goniotomy when eye drops and laser treatments fail to lower the eye.

The Retina Centre also conducts a full array of other invasive and non-invasive procedures to test and treat glaucoma.

Cataract Surgery

Surgery is the only practical option to treat and restore vision in case of a cataract. Treating cataracts is no longer a complex procedure in India. Our doctors regularly treat and help cataract patients get back to everyday life with utmost care and assurance. We have a team of specialists for surgical procedures to treat cataracts including,

  • Extracapsular Cataract Extraction

In this type of cataract surgery, a tiny incision is made at the connecting point between the cornea and sclera. The elastic lens capsule (posterior capsule) remains intact. Doctors remove the hard cataract-ridden natural lens and implant an artificial IOL in its place.

  • Intracapsular cataract extraction

Intracapsular surgery removes the lens and the posterior capsule completely; place IOL in the anterior chamber or suture the artificial lens with the sulcus. This type of surgery is performed for patients suffering from highly developed cataracts with severely damaged lens posterior capsules.

Our team of cataract specialists offers high-level expertise in treating congenital cataract problems in children involving,

  • Phaco aspiration
  • Primary Posterior capsulotomy
  • Anterior vitrectomy
  • Positioning of IOL

Cornea surgery

Corneal diseases are eye conditions that can cause clouding, distortion, scarring, and eventually blindness. Over 4.5% of Indian adults have corneal blindness. The common corneal disorders are Bullous keratopathy, Cogan syndrome, Corneal ulcer, Herpes simplex keratitis, Herpes zoster ophthalmicus, Interstitial keratitis, Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, Keratoconus. The standard surgical procedures to treat corneal diseases and conditions are,

  • Keratoplasty is also known as corneal transplant and involves replacing damaged parts of the cornea with corneal tissues from donors. When the doctor replaces the entire cornea, the procedure is called penetrating keratoplasty.
  • Pterygium excision – Pterygium is the abnormal tissue growth on the transparent membrane on the sclera and adjacent cornea of the eyes. This procedure involves the removal of the abnormal tissues.
  • Scleral wound repair – A corneoscleral laceration can occur following any blunt, penetrating, or perforating injury on the eyes. Scleral repair involves closure of the wound by interrupted sutures.
  • Amniotic membrane grafting – Amniotic membrane is the innermost layer on the placenta and can function as a basement membrane substitute or as temporary grafting. It helps to cure various corneal diseases, including corneal wounds, damaged sclera. This procedure is becoming very effective and popular due to new tissue preservation techniques and precision surgical interventions. –

Neuro Opthalmology

Neuro-ophthalmology is a multidisciplinary subject involving neurology and ophthalmology. It helps to diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders in the nerve system related to vision and mechanism of eyes’ regular functioning. The Retina Centre is a multidisciplinary eye care hospital with complete expertise and infrastructure in neuro-ophthalmological diagnosis and treatments. Usually, the surgical procedures conducted as part of neuro-ophthalmology are,

  • Eye muscle surgery
  • Optic nerve fenestration
  • Botulinum injections

Squint

It is a condition when both eyes do not look in a direction together. One eye might look straight while the other eye might look inward, outward, downward, or upward. The causes might range from nerve injuries to dysfunctional muscle control of the eyes. The standard surgical procedures to treat squint involve detaching eye muscles and placing them in the correct position to rectify the eye’s direction. The standard procedures are,

  • Squint surgery horizontal muscle
  • Squint surgery oblique/ vertical muscle

Oculoplasty

Oculopasty is a range of plastic surgical procedures involving the eyes and the surrounding areas. These procedures can be functional like improving tear drainage system or cosmetic for improving cosmetic appearance. The Retina Centre is one of the very few facilities in North East India offering a wide range of oculoplastic surgical procedures. Some of the popular procedures are,

  • Artificial eye implantation
  • Entropion correction
  • Ectropion correction
  • External dacryocystorhinostomy
  • Blepharoplasty
  • Excision of eyelid tumor
  • Fornix reconstruction
  • Dermis fat + lower formation
  • Ptosis management

Our specialist oculoplastic surgeons are experts in both the science and artistic aspects of ocular plastic surgeries.

Paediatric Opthalmology

It is a subspeciality involving diagnosis, treatment, and management of children’s eye diseases, disorders, and conditions. Various learning disorders and attention deficit problems with school students can be attributed to functional disabilities in our eyes. Our pediatric eye specialists are highly skilled in diagnosing common and critical pediatric ophthalmologic issues.
